Senior Art Portfolio

These are a couple of pieces that I pulled from my AP art portfolio from my senior year of high school. My overarching theme is interaction between nature and humans.

I like to capture the simple moments. This caterpillar was crawling across the table while my mother and I were having an enjoyable day outside. I appreciate the beauty of such a small creature crawling on a bottle cap. This was my first gouache piece and I fell in love with the medium right away.

Sudden Hive Collapse Disorder is a relatively new affliction that has been hurting bees. This art piece is a play on words. I aimed to create an optical illusion to show a sudden collapse of the hive. Scientists do not know what causes whole hives to suddenly die but there is a speculation global warming or pesticides may have a hand in the problem.

This piece focuses on the Pepper Speckled Moth. Pre-Industrial revolution the moth was black and white to blend in with the bark of Birch trees. However with the rise of industry the coal dust from factories covered roofs and Birch trees. Moths with the genetic mutation of being dark suddenly had an advantage. The darker moths were less visible to predators and so more of them survived to pass on their genetic mutation.
